Fashion blogger Shangri-La aka MBFWA kicks off today, so it was quite fitting that I attended the Susie Bubble lecture at SLQ right before I left Brisbane. 28 year old Miss Bubble (Susanna Lau) spoke candidly for over an hour - covering all bases of fashion, commerce and media, stressing the importance of freedom of expression and unique viewpoints in the crowded digital medium. She also mentioned a few of her own blog inspirations, including THIS ONE (a visual encyclopedia perfect for design students or avid sewers).

PS. Keep an eye out for some of my MBFWA coverage this week, first up this morning: Gail Sorronda's first trans-seasonal offering (titled Oh My Goth!).

THE STYLING GAMES: EPILOGUE

Jazzy wearing the Lover blazer and GALA Curios ring from Bessie Head.
I had originally planned to share some backstage shots from the styling challenge, but it was only until I arrived home that I realised that nearly all of my behind the scenes shots were slightly out of focus (cue facepalm). I'll blame this one on pre-public speaking nerves, the crowded backstage area packed with models/hair & makeup and shooting through my glasses. As for the public speaking, we were all quite nervous about filling a 45 minute segment with the sound of our own voices, but luckily no grossly inappropriate jokes or stuttering ensued. Kaity went for a look inspired by florals, minimalism and fine details - while Abbey styled her own ode to the 90's (complete with the best tartan pants I've seen). When I'm not dressing like a man, I dress like a schoolgirl - which explains the preppy looks for my models Blake and Kim. Below are some shots of the final outfits, for the full series check out the IG'ZIST page here.

DREAM GIRL

This semester is the last I'll spend at uni and as exciting as the prospect of graduating and following my dream is, it's completely daunting. So, to try to combat the dreaded graduate and then work in retail reality that may be facing me, I'm interning at two Brisbane publishing powerhouses (sort of). I spend my week commuting between the Lightspace studio of Four Thousand and the tucked away South Brisbane offices of Australian Hairdressers Journal. Now that I spend most of my life in a semi-professional setting, I need to dress better than the usual slob I am at uni. In a dream world with a dream wallet, I would purchase my dream intern wardrobe.

Bangs and Wangs

'I like her bangs'.
On Friday night, the girls and I visited Shop Late at Cloudland, where I wanted to catch up with the designers  for two local labels showing at MBFWA: Ash to Gold and Tovah. Ash to Gold has a distinctive beach-side bohemian aesthetic and I'm really interested to see how this will translate for their winter range (which is being previewed this week at Cloudland). On the other hand, designer Tovah Cottle favoured thicker fabrics and structure, with a collection of samples and current season pieces that were all architecturally beautiful and highly covetable for winter.

I THOUGHT YOU HAD GONE FOREVER

Here's a shoot I worked on at the end of summer break, with an obvious reference to a certain Australian film (see my previous write up here).

ZOE AND THE INFLATABLE DRESS

Our long-time readers will be familiar with my close friend and designer Zoe Gibson, as I've previously written about her swimwear shootalpaca inspired poncho and the results of The Landing collaboration series. Her latest self-imposed design challenge was to create an inflatable dress, which actually turned into a small nightmare as the outer layer struggled to stay in shape and remain inflated. After countless hours of work and many different prototypes, the final dress was developed (modelled by our friend Anna above, photographer by Zoe).

The inflatable dress has also scored Zoe a finalist position in the Queens Plaza 2012 Avant Garde Student Design Competition and the prize is an internship with Akira  Isogawa, at his studio in Sydney. Other finalists include Kathleen Bowles who also worked on The Landing with us last year, as well as local blogger/fashion designer/musician Chloe Cooper. Voting for the competition is open now and each voter has the chance of winning a $1000 Queens Plaza gift voucher, so have a look at the finalists here
